Accepted Answer

We look at whether a family's current housing creates real challenges, including poor structural conditions, overcrowding, housing costs exceeding 35% of income, health concerns worsened by current housing, or a location not accessible to schools, shopping, or transportation.

Do families need to be able to pay for the home?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Habitat homes are not given away. Families must show they can afford a Habitat mortgage and the responsibilities of homeownership. Monthly housing costs are based on 25% of gross household income. Home insurance is paid separately.

What income does HabitatNB consider during the application process?

We review household income to confirm a family falls within the qualifying range for the location and type of home. Employment income, disability income, and retirement income may all be considered. Verification is required for all adults in the home.

Yes. A satisfactory credit report is required, with no bankruptcy within the last two years and no current consumer proposal. Long-term debt is also reviewed.

Numbers matter, but they are only part of the picture. Habitat for Humanity New Brunswick’s work is also reflected in the experiences of families, volunteers, and community partners who help bring affordable homeownership to life.

Homeownership, simply put, was a dream before Habitat for Humanity. Always a goal but, in reality, I never believed I'd have a home to call our own. Without Habitat, my family would not have a home to build lifelong memories, to feel what being part of a community is. My wish is to give back!
